BYGGYZ is a sandwich shop on the Lower East Side serving chef-driven creations emphasizing prime ingredients, judicious construction, flavor balance and the notion that a good sandwich always aspires to be a meal in the hand.
Dewey Dufresne, the visionary behind BYGGYZ, has always believed in the power of the sandwich. In 1969 he opened Joe’s, the legendary sandwich shop on Benefit Street in Providence, RI. Other culinary outings include 71 Clinton Fresh Food, which Dewey opened in 1999 with several partners from the neighborhood and his son Wylie Dufresne in his first role as Chef. From 2003 — 2014 Dewey ran the highly acclaimed, Michelin starred wd~50 with Wylie. Both 71 Clinton and wd~50 were located on the same Clinton Street block as BYGGYZ.
The signature sandwich, the BYGGYBEEF, made its debut in a pop up at the San Gennaro Festival of 2011 and was conceived by Dewey in the kitchen of wd~50.
Executing sandwich dreams at BYGGYZ are Chef Landen Garcia and Sous Chef Spenser Reilly, both formerly of The Cannibal in Manhattan.
